My New Carpet Is Smelly! What Do I Do?

Posted on November 10, 2022

If you’ve ever had a new carpet installed in your Tujunga home, then you know the smell. Some are smellier than others, and you may have unfortunately gotten stuck with one of the really smelly ones. So what is this smell? And what can you do about it?

First: What Is New Carpet Smell?

The new carpet smell comes from a combination of chemicals present on the carpet. These are called volatile organic compounds, or VOCs. As these VOCs evaporate, they get into the air, leaving a bad smell. Some carpets have more VOCs than others, and you can deliberately try to get a low VOC carpet if you really can’t stand the smell.

That’s the basics of what you’re smelling, and there are a few ways to get rid of it. We will cover many of the DIY tactics along and not simply focus on the professional approach to carpet cleaning.

Airing Out

Try to air out your room as much as possible. Leave windows and doors open, turn on a fan, and do whatever you can to increase that airflow. This should help facilitate that smell leaving the carpet and dissipating into the atmosphere.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is known for being great at odor elimination. Sprinkle baking soda onto your carpet and let it sit for a day. Afterward, vacuum it all back up. This should help a bit with getting rid of the new carpet smell.

Vinegar

Vinegar is another household item that’s great at eliminating odors, as long as you don’t mind the vinegar smell for a while. Leave bowls of vinegar inside the carpeted room for a day or two, and then pour them out. You shouldn’t have a strong vinegar smell to deal with afterward.

Apples In Water

One way to eliminate smells is to leave bowls of water with apple slices inside overnight. The apple should help absorb and replace the new carpet smell in the room. Make sure you don’t accidentally draw pests in the process, though.

Vacuum The Room

A good vacuum should help remove some of the VOCs in your carpet, thus eliminating the smell. The VOCs are a natural part of the carpet manufacturing process, so you’re not going to be able to vacuum everything, but you’ll still eliminate some of the particles.

Plants

Some plants are great at absorbing smells and can even bring better aromas to your room. Try buying plants purported to eliminate chemicals from the air, like dracaena, bamboo palms, peace lilies, and spider plants.

Air Purifier

As you can imagine, getting a good air purifier should help eliminate your new carpet smell. Air purifiers are great at getting rid of odor-causing chemicals you might have in your air. They’re definitely something to look into when dealing with any kind of unpleasant smell.

Steam Cleaning

A professional Tujunga steam cleaner can help eliminate the VOCs in your carpet, which will help the smell go away faster. Steam cleaning cleans deeper than vacuuming and is a great way to destroy anything nasty on your carpet. You can call us today for carpet cleaning if you need professional cleaning in Tujunga.
